Hi, I’m Alyssa

I’m a strategic communications consultant. Nonprofits and universities hire me when they have something important to say and the saying of it has gotten complicated.

The longer version

With more than 20 years of experience in communications — from leading PR agencies to national nonprofits — I’ve learned that the best work happens when someone listens closely and then brings something to the table. Every organization has a unique story to tell and specific goals to reach. My job is to understand what you’re trying to accomplish, bring you clear recommendations you can act on and keep listening as we go.

I started my career at agencies like Porter Novelli and Spitfire Strategies, where I learned to write with precision, manage complex projects under pressure and develop communications strategies for national campaigns. I went on to lead public relations for RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization, before spending nearly a decade at Johns Hopkins University working on digital strategy, web redesigns and content development for the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Whiting School of Engineering.

In 2018, I ran a website redesign for the National Federation of the Blind and rebuilt it around accessibility for 50,000 members nationwide. That project reinforced what I already knew: I love solving complex communication challenges, collaborating with mission-driven teams and creating work that actually makes a difference.

In 2020, I launched Alyssa Oliveri Communications to bring that same level of strategic thinking and care to organizations that need someone who’ll stay in it with them. Whether it’s refining your brand, developing web content, planning a communications strategy or managing a digital project, I take on work I know I can do well, I’m honest about what will make the biggest difference, and I hand over things that are finished and ready to use.

I studied marketing and psychology at Georgetown, which is a nerdy way of saying I’m fascinated by what makes a message land — why one sentence stays with someone all week and another one doesn’t. I’ll tell you what I think, recommend what’s right for you and work alongside you to create communications that truly serve your mission.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me around Baltimore with my wife and our two German Shepherds, Robbie and Roger, making art and working my way through the city’s breweries. I’ve also served on the board of Girls on the Run Central Maryland and volunteered with organizations like Planned Parenthood of Maryland, because I believe in supporting work that matters.

Two very cute German Shepherd looking dogs.
